YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAMTraining youth from around the world in leadership, social entrepreneurship, and cultural competency by building the skills, confidence, and networks needed to make a difference in their local communities and the global community. Since 2001, MCW Youth Leadership Retreats have empowered youth from Africa, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and the United States to be leaders in their own communities. During the one-week interactive experience, youth delegates prepare personal vision plans, highlighting their communities' challenges and identifying steps to create sustainable solutions. The range of vision plans is as varied as the experiences and dreams of the participants: For example, in 2007, a Palestinian participant envisioned her peers mentoring children about leadership; a participant from Manhattan envisioned helping adults learn to speak with teens who have endured a tragic loss; and, a Tanzanian delegate developed a plan for a small micro-economic initiative in his home town.
In addition to participating in activities on group dynamics, cross-cultural dialogue, and social entrepreneurship, delegates have the opportunity to meet with leading social entrepreneurs, who share their experience and expertise at the retreat.
The retreats are organized and facilitated by a diverse team, including members of the MCW Board of Directors and Board of Advisors, past retreat participants (known as mentors), and post-high school volunteers.
Each retreat concludes at the MCW Open Doors event in New York City. Friends, families, partners, and supporters of MCW attend this special event to learn about MCW and the retreat participants' vision and action plans. Past Open Doors events have taken place at New York University, The Tolerance Center, and the Rubin Museum.
