In 2008, MUHAS and MCW developed a partnership dedicated to improving oral healthcare in the country, beginning with the upgrade of the public clinics at the School of Dentistry. The first phase of the project involved upgrading the school's facilities with in-kind equipment donations and technical expertise from dental industry leaders. This initiative was valued at approximately USD $2 million. To ensure the sustainability of the upgrade, MCW partnered with the US-based equipment donors to bring two newly-hired equipment repair technicians from Tanzania to the USA for training on maintenance and repair. The upgrade enhances the school’s ability to attract and train students and faculty with state-of-the-art equipment and to treat patients.
Establishment of Dental Laboratory at MUHAS School of Dentistry The second phase of the project involved upgrading the MUHAS dental laboratory. Here, MCW partnered with MUHAS to handle building-related renovation tasks such as upgrading the electricity system, installing air conditioning, connecting water and gas, and installing benches and painting. Then, together with its industry partners and volunteers, MCW designed the layout of the laboratory at MUHAS and facilitated the donation of the equipment and instruments (valued at approximately $400,000 USD) to outfit the lab. MCW is also facilitated further equipment maintenance training for the two lab technicians in the USA. You can learn more about their training here. Ultimately, MCW and MUHAS hope this dental laboratory will become a regional center of excellence, providing dental appliances and prosthetics to all of Tanzania, as well as neighboring countries.
