Construction of a new community center began in June 2010 in the village of Chanyanya, a fishing community nestled on a lagoon of the Kafue River. The building of a center here is possible due to the combined efforts of a committed board of trustees, chaired by Kabinga Pande Jr, and local leadership in Zambia. The center will offer courses in tailoring, construction, agriculture, and livestock management. It will also offer a youth group and tutoring to supplement the education students receive at the government basic school. The work of the center is currently overseen by Joe Hamweene, the MC-Zambia Country Coordinator, who is from Chanyanya. Joe is also enrolled in a diploma program through South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal University in community and youth organizing.
