Over 100 community members attended a series of events at the MCR-Kayenzi community center to commemorate the 1994 genocide against Tutsis from April 6-12, 2011. Organized by MCR in partnership with local authorities of four surrounding villages (imidugudu), the aim behind the event was to meet together to remember, to honor lost families and friends, and to discuss the future of the nation.

The events began on Thursday, April 7 with an opening ceremony. Then, for the next few days, afternoon discussions were held on the commemoration theme: "Upholding the Truth, Preserving Our Dignity." The discussions included survivor testimonies.

A group of young survivors attending MCR programs organized “A Walk to Remember,” a journey from the Kayenzi center to the Ntarama genocide memorial in the neighboring village. They were joined by friends who had not experienced the genocide. The walk helped explain to community youth what happened in 1994 and their shared role in fighting for genocide prevention and in contributing to build a better country.
